02/24/2003 Amendment of Registration agreement by HKDNR

HK Domain holders or registrants should have received notice from HKDNR with regards to the amendment of rules of the domain registration agreement. Yet HKDNR failed to highlight the changes.

For your ready reference, I have compiled a table displayed point by point to show the major difference.  Please click to the link http://www.mastermate.com.hk/archive/hkdnr.htm for details. Words displayed in Red are the major amendments.

New things include introduction of domain  .idv.hk and that any HK resident apart from being a commercial or social entity or educational institutions or government bodies  is now qualified to register a domain name. However please be reminded that for idv.hk, the possession right will be forfeited upon receipt of notice of death of the registrant by HKDNR (clause 21 f). However, HKDNR replied that the domain name ownership is transferable. Therefore for those registrants of idv.hk who might want to maintain the domain name perpetually, they are advised to take appropriate actions in due course.

Displayed hereunder is the extract of HKDNR's reply -

According to our Regisration Agreement V.2.0, HKDNR are entitled to remove an .idv.hk domain name on the day that HKDNR has notice of the death of the customer.

Since, all domain names under HKDNR Agreement V.2.0 are transferable. Therefore, you may consider to transfer your concern domain name to a third party. For details, please refer to our Registration Agreement V.2.0 clause 20.

Also there are some wording changes to provide greater protection for HKDNR and you might want to take a look.

Subject: Capitalism

Got an article talking about capitalism which is quite amusing. Do you agree their definition? Anyway, don't take it serious.

 TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM:

You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.

 ENRON VENTURE CAPITALISM:

You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. Sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States, leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public buys your bull.

 AN AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when the cow drops dead.

 A FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows.

 A JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. You then create clever cow cartoon images called Cowkimon and market them World-Wide.

 A GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You reengineer them so they live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

 A BRITISH CORPORATION

You have two cows. Both are mad.

 AN  ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows, but you don't know where they are. You break for lunch. You drink wine. You make love. You sleep the afternoon away.

 A RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows. You count them and learn you have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 12 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

 A SWISS CORPORATION

You have 5000 cows, none of which belong to you. You charge others for storing them.

 A HINDU CORPORATION

You have two cows. You worship them.

 A CHINESE CORPORATION

You have two cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim full employment, high bovine productivity, and arrest the newsman who reported the numbers.

 AN ISRAELI CORPORATION

So, there are these two Jewish cows, right?

They open a milk factory, an ice cream store, and then sell the movie rights. They send their calves to Harvard to become doctors. So, who needs people?

 A WELSH CORPORATION

You have two cows. That one on the left is kinda cute.

06/19/2002  World Cup Formula

See, Brazil will be the winner!!  Yea ......

Its quite interesting!  Do you believe this formula?

Brazil last won the world cup in 1994.
Before that they won it in 1970.
Add 1970 and 1994, it equals 3964.

Argentina last won the world cup in 1986.
Before that they won it in 1978.
Add 1978 and 1986, it equals 3964.

Germany last won in 1990.
Before that they won in 1974.
Add 1990 and 1974, it equals 3964.

So going by this logic, the winner of the 2002 world cup is the same as the
3964 - 2002 = 1962 world cup.
The 1962 world cup was won by Brazil.

10/03/2001 Do something in the address book to avoid virus

Thanks Vivian who relayed the following suggestion to us. BUT WE ARE NOT PERFECTLY SURE IF THIS CAN AVOID SENDING OUT UNWANTED MESSAGE TOTALLY. VIRUS MAKERS CAN WRITE SCRIPT TO ACCESS EMAIL ADDRESS BOOK BY RANDOM INSTEAD OF BY SEQUENCE. ANYWAY, WORTH TO TAKE A LOOK FOR THE FOLLOWING SUGGESTION.

Trick your address book!

For those who are unaware, many computer viruses spread themselves by sending themselves to everyone in your address book. Well, if you want to avoid this sort of thing, here's a great tip: This tip won't prevent you from getting any viruses but it will stop those viruses from latching onto your address book and sending itself out to others.

To catch an email computer viruses, create a contact in your email address book with the name : 0000 with no email address in the details.

This contact will then show up as your first contact. If a virus attempts to do a "send all" on your contact list, your pc will put up an error message saying that: "The Message could not be sent. One or more recipients do not have an e-mail address. Please check your Address Book and make sure all the recipients have a valid e-mail address."

You click on OK and the offending (virus) message would not have been sent to anyone. Of course no changes have been made to your original contacts list.

The offending (virus) message may then be automatically stored in your "Drafts" or "Outbox" folder. Go in there and delete the offending message. Problem is solved and virus is not spread.

Try this and pass on to your email contacts.  The more people that use this technique, the less vulnerable we will be to viruses that spread in this manner!

ATTN: DIRECTOR/CEO,

PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

I know you will be surprise to receive this but do please consider it a request from a suffering family in serious need of your assistance. My family had to bring before you this proposal because we sincerely hope you will be reliable to assist us.

Anyway, my name is as above stated. I am the first son to the second wife of the recently assassinated President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, late Laurent Kabila. My mother got your contact information through a family friend who works with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Six months before the assassination of my father, he had used my name to deposit in a metal box the flat sum of Fifteen Million United States Dollars=us$15m=in a vault of a private security firm in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Security Company do not know the actual content of the box deposited with them since my father declared it to be precious metals. This money was to be used for his second tenure election campaign bid but unfortunately, his own personal aide assassinated him in a palace coup on the early hours of January 16th, 2001.

Since my father's death, my stepmother has continued to be extremely mean and discriminatory to us in the family scheme of things because his son, MR.
JOSEPH KABILA, now rule as president. She has even arbitrarily accused my mother of having masterminded our father's assassination and all sorts of groundless accusations. As a result of all these, I decided to move my family to South Africa. Right now, I am staying with my family here in Johannesburg but as refugees. As it is, I have now decided to divert this money for our own personal use but we would want to get it transferred outside the continent for onward investment purposes. We do not want to invest here due to the volatile and sensitive status of the region.

As an international partner, I genuinely solicit that you kindly help me and my family transfer this money into your country through your personal or company bank account for safekeeping pending my immediate arrival for onward  investments, which we are going to rely on you heavily to help us  materialize. This money will be paid into your account as a contract fund through a prime local bank here in Johannesburg.

I must stress here that there is no risk involvement of any kind since our Attorney have mapped out a very perfect and smooth-free transfer plans that will be concluded within a maximum of five working days of receiving your approval.

We have resolved to offer you 20% of the money for your assistance and 5% of it will be for all kinds of expenses you will incur in the course of transferring this money. The rest will be for investments in your country or anywhere you might suggest.

Further discussions will commence when we hear from you but do not forget the absolute confidentiality and mutual trust required in this transaction.

Kindly contact us on the above-specified direct contact numbers should this proposal happen to meet your utmost considerations.

Truly yours,

MR PITA MOYO KABILA

Remarks: ABC is the branch and XYZ Ltd is the parent company of the branch.

HOWEVER, THIS FORMAT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTED BY HSBC FOR ALL NEW CUSTOMERS. The format of the branch chop should display as follows:

04/21/2001 Wash the top with running water and soap when you take canned soft drink or beverage

A stock clerk was sent to clean up a storeroom in Maui, Hawaii.  When he got back, he was complaining that the storeroom was really filthy and that he had noticed dried mouse or rat  droppings in some areas. A couple of days later, he started to feel like he was coming down with a stomach flu, complained of sore joints and headaches, and began to vomit. He went to bed and never really got up again. Within two days he was severely ill and weak. His blood sugar count was down to 66, and his face and eyeballs were yellow. He was rushed to the emergency at Pali-Momi, where he was diagnosed to be suffering from massive organ failure. He died shortly before midnight. No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat or mouse droppings at any time. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus)  that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings. Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly. An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the Doctor's suspicions. This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on. Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents. Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans. The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, super store has rats and mice. And their warehouse most assuredly does! Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw. The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned.

04/19/2001 BEWARE....... For all of you who use HSBC, this mail was forwarded to me by one friend. Believe it or not, suggest you get alert if you face similar situation.

Quote
Just wanted to warn you about something that happened to me the other day.  I was getting some cash out at the cash point outside at HSBC - Saint George Street, Hanover Square. I put my card in and a message came up on the screen saying the machine was temporarily out of order. A lady approached me and told me that this had happened to her the other day and what I needed to do was key my pin number in and then press cancel twice.  I did this and of course no card was returned. I left the machine thinking that it had swallowed my card. But when I returned to HSBC the following morning, my card wasn't there. According to the police this method of  stealing bankcards is called the 'Lebanese loop'. A plastic envelope is made up that fits the hole in the machine perfectly. When you put your card in, the machine knows it is there  but cannot read it and therefore the message comes up on the screen. Once the pin number has been given away and the card left in the machine, it  is  then 'looped' out and the spending starts! I had 500 taken from my account  before I realised what had happened and cancelled it. The women who approached me at the cash point was late 40's in age, 5.3 in height, dark hair and eyes. The way she was dressed was smart as if she had just left work. Please pass this information on to all your friends

The Consumer Council of Hong Kong has cautioned that certain computer equipment such as inkjet printers and monitors pose potential fire hazards.

This followed combustion tests commissioned by the U.S. National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) which found that the plastic enclosure of some inkjet printers and monitors may be ignited by a small external flame (e.g. a match) and will burn rapidly, reaching excessive temperatures and emitting large volumes of toxic smoke.

The hazards are not with fires originating within the appliances as the internal components of computer equipment are constructed in compliance with respective safety standard to prevent such fires from spreading beyond their immediate vicinity. The main concern is with fires caused by external ignition sources.

SUGGEST management to re-examine whether their computer equipments installed in office are adequately ventilated; electric currents are not overloaded; lighting cigarettes are distant from the equipments (if your office is not yet a smoking free office).

12/07/2000 The "ABCD" rule

An office manager complained  to me that she got a very unreasonable and impatient boss. For every her progress reporting or discussion about some new plans, her boss was never patient enough to listen from her and never let her finish the presentation. She felt hurt not receiving due respect.

Her boss was tough but indeed most bosses were with similar characters. Be frankly, I observed  that this office manager was not very good in presentation skill. For her presentation, she always talked a lot of irrelevant subjects and unfortunately not to the point. If her boss asked her opinion, she always failed to give a definite answer but just keep on talking and explaining.  Sometimes I even believe she might not know herself what she was talking about.

I just remember some examination tips which might be also helpful to executives reporting to the superiors. i.e. the "ABCD" rule

A - Accurate   B - Brief  C- Clear  D - Direct (Be relevant)

I believe any reporting and presentation should be brief and to the point. Elaboration of some points are only necessary if your audience do request. Suggestions should be definite instead of vague. Performance is measured by results not by tonnage of words.

Handling difficult customer

Last Friday, an angry lady walked into a bank, approached the document collection counter and then roared "I try to use my Auto Teller Machine card outside the bank to transfer money from one of my accounts to another but fails. I don't know why???" The bank staff explained "Oh, Lady.. because you have not used your card over half year....for security reason the card functions will be temporarily suspended...It will be easy to reactivate the card to function...would you please go to any teller counter and ask the teller to serve you..."

At that time the bank was full of customers and a long queue there waiting to be served. The lady roared even louder throwing out to the bank staff with a series of offensive words. The staff's face turned red but back to normal after a few seconds saying calmly  "Lady, this is the document collection counter and is not supposed to do other things. You see, some customers are waiting behind you in the queue..." But the angry lady insisted the bank staff to reactivate the card for her in that counter. Without arguing further, the bank staff entertained the request and soon the case is settled.

The bank staff is handling fine for this difficult customer. But I would suggest  a better way to handle this case. First, the lady's request is apparently unreasonable. To serve her in the document collection counter will be unfair to other customers in the queue. But to argue with the customer is unproductive and might waste more time. Since there is customer service staff in the bank hall, it would be wise to ask one of them to help. On one hand, this will relieve the document collection counter doing the proper assigned job. On the other hand, the customer service staff can please the angry customer by providing her a particular service without asking her to follow the long queue.  Notes on customer service

We have a client who fired a technical staff due to his poor performance. In the office, our client had some computers installed and no passwords were set in the computers during purchase. However somehow the dismissed staff, without knowledge to the management, set up supervisor and user password in the bios of one of computers. He declined to disclose the password to the company afterwards when subsequently after his departure  the management discovered they could not boot up the computer.

Whilst there is method to reset the bios into factory default which deactivate any password settings, it takes some times to rectify the problem. Therefore suggest management to set supervisor password themselves to avoid any unauthorized change of the bios setting. Write down the passwords and keep physically in two places just in case you forget the password and your computer is locked.

11/27/2000 Do you really know whether you are the owner or registrant of your domain?

I Have a client who got some troubles when he wanted to change ISP.

Most often,  you let your ISP or web hosting company to do the domain registration job for you. An honest ISP or web hosting company will act on your behalf and register you as the owner or registrant of your domain name. But there are avoidably some dishonest guys. If the registration is in HK, case will be much simpler because a BR Cert is required for registration. Your agent cannot pirate your ownership. But this will not be the case when you register your domain as a ".com" ".net" or ".org". The registry in U.S. will not require any document from the applicant to prove your identity giving the chance to your agent to make himself the registrant. If your domain name is valuable to you, you are running a risk to pay huge money to get back the domain some times later.

To ensure you hold the ownership, suggest you contact your counterpart and ask them to give you the details of registration. This should be always available from your vendor.

11/25/2000 A client asked us whether he can use a Branch Registration to register a .com.hk domain name in Hong Kong. The Answer is NO. Extract from HKNIC:

A: No. Currently, a Branch Registration is considered as a part or division of an organization. Therefore, we are sorry that we do not consider it as an organization eligible to get a .com.hk domain names. You can check the top of a BR certificate to see whether it is a business registration or branch registration.

I apologize to everyone on the ADSM-L. ADSM-L is the first address in my  address book and was hit before I could kill my mailer. It got to the "B's"  before I could kill it. I have updated my Norton Antivirus scanner since,  they are now supposed to be able to recognize the signature.

01/01/2000 ICC issues Incoterms 2000

INCOTERMS, standard references used by traders for sales contracts, have been revised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and are to be used in contracts with effect from January 1, 2000.

Revisions take into account the wider use of intermodal transport and clearly outline loading/unloading obligations.

Incoterms include EXW (Ex Works); FCA (Free Carrier); FAS (Free Alongside Ship); FOB (Free On Board); CFR (Cost and Freight); CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight); CPT (Carriage Paid To); CIP (Carriage and Insurance Paid To); DAF (Delivery At Frontier); DES (Delivery Ex Ship); DEQ (Delivery Ex Quay); DDU (Delivery Duty Unpaid); and DDP (Delivery Duty Paid).

Although abbreviations remain unchanged, definitions have been revised. For example, FAS and DEQ Incoterms now reverse customs clearance duties. Under DEQ the buyer must undertake the clearing of goods, while under FAS the seller is required to clear cargo for export.
